Black knight: An autonomous vehicle for competition
نویسندگان
چکیده
Black Knight, the University of Central Florida’s vehicle in the 11th Intelligent Ground Vehicle Competition (IGVC) competed in 2003. Completing in 5th place in the navigational challenge and 10th in the autonomous challenge in its first competition has proven our vehicle to be a strong competitor in this competition. The vehicle has many interesting features that allow it to achieve its success. The vehicle’s 300 lb. capacity allows for two onboard full-sized computers and two 12 V marine batteries that power the computers for up to 2 h. The vision system is not a simple reactive system but rather it classifies its view into objects and builds a map of the territory as it learns of its features while traveling. Two transformations and the location data from the GPS and other sensors are used to associate the locations in the image to locations in the map. The operations of the vehicle are modeled after the typical operations of a ship. We have programs that perform the functions of the captain, the helm, the navigator, and the engineer. In addition we have a program performing sensor data fusion from the GPS, compass, and wheel encoder data. The navigation uses an adapted two-dimensional approximate cell decomposition method that satisfies the nonholononic constraints of our vehicle and allows it to find the shortest path to the goal while avoiding all obstacles. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Knight Sweeper 4200 Autonomous Metal Detecting Robot
This document discusses the design of our Knight Sweeper vehicle. Knight Sweeper is an autonomous vehicle designed to detect any metallic objects and avoid obstacles during its route of navigation. Once detection occurs the vehicle is designed to identify region of detection and avoid collision with the actual metallic object or obstacle in its way. Knight Sweeper will be able to operate in a m...
متن کاملIdentification of an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Dynamic Using Extended Kalman Filter with ARMA Noise Model
In the procedure of designing an underwater vehicle or robot, its maneuverability and controllability must be simulated and tested, before the product is finalized for manufacturing. Since the hydrodynamic forces and moments highly affect the dynamic and maneuverability of the system, they must be estimated with a reasonable accuracy. In this study, hydrodynamic coefficients of an autonomous un...
متن کاملAutonomous Underwater Vehicle Hull Geometry Optimization Using a Multi-objective Algorithm Approach
Abstarct In this paper, a new approach to optimize an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) hull geometry is presented. Using this methode, the nose and tail of an underwater vehicle are designed, such that their length constraints due to the arrangement of different components in the AUV body are properly addressed. In the current study, an optimal design for the body profile of a torpedo-shaped...
متن کاملObstacle avoidance for an autonomous vehicle using force field method
This paper presents a force field concept for guiding a vehicle at a high speed maneuver. This method is similar to potential field method. In this paper, motion constrains like vehicles velocity, distance to obstacle and tire conditions and such lane change conditions as zero slop condition and zero lateral acceleration are discussed. After that, possible equations as vehicles path ar...
متن کاملLinear Time Varying MPC Based Path Planning of an Autonomous Vehicle via Convex Optimization
In this paper a new method is introduced for path planning of an autonomous vehicle. In this method, the environment is considered cluttered and with some uncertainty sources. Thus, the state of detected object should be estimated using an optimal filter. To do so, the state distribution is assumed Gaussian. Thus the state vector is estimated by a Kalman filter at each time step. The estimation...
